Sciatica FAQs

Here at Hoosier Family Chiropractic in Bloomington, IN, we see a lot of patients with sciatic nerve pain. A common cause of this pain is sciatica or pressure on the sciatic nerve. A sciatica diagnosis usually leaves patients with questions. Here are some of the most common ones our chiropractor receives:

.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

The main symptom of sciatica is pain along the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs out of the spine through the lower back, rear end, and down into the leg and foot. People may also experience numbness, weakness, and tingling while sitting still or as a result of certain movements in the same area.

What are the causes of sciatica?

Sciatica comes from compression of the sciatic nerve, as was previously mentioned. This compression can come from poor posture or another underlying condition such as a herniated disk.

How is sciatica diagnosed?

Professionals can diagnose sciatica by hearing the patient's symptoms and testing their bodily functions such as range of motion and strength. If an underlying condition is suspected to be responsible, imaging tests such as MRIs may be taken to diagnose that condition.

How is it treated?

Sciatica can be treated by a chiropractor or a traditional doctor, depending on the severity and other circumstances. Here at Hoosier Family Chiropractic in Bloomington, IN, we treat this condition with spinal manipulation and physical therapy. Other potential treatments include heating or ice packs and pain medications, although these will not help if the condition is caused by an underlying issue that requires surgery or other treatment.

Can sciatica be prevented?

Although it can't be entirely prevented, some precautions can be taken to minimize the risk of developing sciatica. These include maintaining a proper posture, getting regular exercise, and being sure not to overly strain the back. Exercises known as" nerve glides" can make sure the nerve is moving through its housing properly. A diet with enough of the correct nutrients will also promote overall spine and nerve health.
